Sol Amor Recommends
Everyone’s hair type, hairstyle, and tolerance for a hair routine are different. Just like skincare, hair care is all about finding what works for you.
Here are a few of our favorite affordable (all under $40), tried-and-tested products we genuinely recommend.
Pure Zero Shampoo & Conditioner – all of these $5–$10 magical bottles have ZERO sulfates, parabens, phosphates, phthalates, dyes, or gluten. They also smell incredible and have a wide variety of options based on what you’re looking for. You can find them online or at Target and Walmart.
The Sauce Clarifying Scalp Treatment – I make my own apple cider vinegar scalp rinse, but this is a great product to try just to get started, and then you can reuse the bottle to make your own. Whether you use hair products or not, if you are in the ocean or chlorine, you are creating scalp buildup from either the saltwater or chemicals. Use this once a week or every other week and notice the softness in your hair. You can find it online or at your local Sally’s Beauty.
Redken’s Acidic Bonding Leave-In Treatment for Hair Repair – Okay, this one is a little pricier, but this is my HOLY GRAIL. I can’t even tell you what this one does or what it has in it — you just have to trust me and experience it for yourself. It is a little bottle of magic, meant to be used ONLY every other wash, only on the ends — a little goes a long way! A bottle will last me a year, and your girl has a lot of hair. I order mine on Amazon.
Curl Talk Defining Cream – This is for my curly-haired girls only (I don’t have straight hair and used to pray every night that God would give me some when I turned 16, but alas, He did not). This cream isn’t too heavy but helps hold shape while moisturizing the frizz away. Another Target purchase.
Leave-In Conditioner – YOU HAVE TO USE LEAVE-IN CONDITIONER. Again, I don’t make the rules — this is just the secret ingredient to healthy hair if you are an avid ocean lover. Leave-in conditioner is the lotion of the body, but for the hair (does that make sense?).
This is the hardest thing to recommend because there are so many different kinds with different scents and different packaging. Some people can’t stand a scent, some people don’t like a pump, and some of you don’t even use any at all (don’t tell me — it’ll just upset me).
Here are some that I have tried, liked, and will buy again when I’m over the phase that I am in (combining the bottom of 3 different leave-ins until they’re used up lol).
Pacifica Vegan Collagen Deep Hydration Leave-In Hair Mask Treatment - smells great, wish the bottle was bigger, works wonders
Ouidad Leave-In Conditioner - smells a little bit like old lady, a tiny bit pricier, but big bottle and works wonders
Raw Sugar Leave-In Conditioner - love the smell of this one, works well for finer hair
Silk Elements Advanced Repair Leave-In Conditioner - HATE that this one is a spray, but works really well. The smell is a little strange (I think it’s the tumeric) but it’s not crazy strong.
BUT BUT BUT - But Jasmine, you didn’t list any hair masks. You’re right girl, I did not. Hair masks, like face masks, are a nice touch when I’m having a self care day but not a part of my everyday routine. With the right shampoo and conditioner, leave-in condiitoner, and proper hair care before you get in the ocean - your hair should be soft, shiny, and manageable (no dreads, unless that’s the look you’re going for - I respect that).
If your hair is not (at this time) manageable, it might be time to switch up your products. Or, I can probably guess, you haven’t had a trim in the last 8-12 weeks. Come see me, I’ll gladly trim it for you. Reminder - a trim does not have to be dramatic. Be sure to inform your hair person that you do not want a cut ONLY a trim.
As always, feel free to reach out to me for any more recommendations or if you have any questions. I also have videos on my social media of my personal hair care routine.
All of my aloha,
Jasmine + Sol Amor Co
